Shuttling is quite common in the world of mountain biking. When you take a shuttle, you basically put your bike on a vehicle, and you ride in the vehicle to the starting point where you plan on beginning your ride. So, should you opt for a mountain bike ride that requires a shuttle to the start? Here are some pros and cons to consider as you make your decision.

Pro: You will probably get to see a more remote trail.

Most mountain bike trails that are only accessible via shuttle are more remote than those that you can just ride or drive up to on your own. So, embarking on a ride that you had to take a shuttle to will likely give you opportunities to see unique terrain, some less-traveled places, and perhaps some largely unknown natural wonders.

Con: You will have to wait for and make plans with the shuttle service.

When you ride a shuttle-only trail, you will have to work with the company that provides the shuttle. They may only operate the shuttle at certain times, which may mean you need to move things around in your own life to schedule your ride. This can be even harder to do if you plan on biking with a group. All members of the team will need to be available when the shuttle is running.

Pro: You'll be "on the records" for safety purposes.

Mountain biking in really remote areas does come with some risks. If you ride a shuttle to your starting point, then the shuttle driver will be aware of where and when they dropped you off. If something were to happen to you, and you were to fail to reach your destination, the shuttle driver could be a good source of information as to your whereabouts.

Con: You'll likely have to pay for the shuttle ride.

Mountain biking can be an expensive sport, especially if you pay to travel and ride in new areas. Adding on a shuttle service adds to the cost. You not only have to pay for the service but you usually are expected to tip the driver.

If you don't mind the added cost and can work your schedule around it, then it's really fun and rewarding to go on a mountain bike ride that requires shuttling. Talk to the shuttle company to learn more about their individual fees and policies.
